Hlavní zápletka se točí kolem židovského obchodníka Augusta Melmotta s podivnou minulostí, který se v devatenáctém století uchýlí do Anglie. Tam narazí na zchudlou aristokratickou rodinu v čele se Sirem Felixem Carburym. Melmotte chce rozjet obchody, každý z rodiny a jejího okolí chce utrhnout kousek pro sebe, ale nakonec všichni poznají, že tak, "jak teď žijí", nemohou mít zaráz peníze, respekt i lásku.
