Příběh holandské exotické tanečnice a kurtizány, vlastním jménem Margarethy Geertruidy Zelleové, která za první světové války sloužila jako dvojitá špionka. Mata Hari, vlastním jménem Margaretha Geertruida Zelleová, se narodila v Nizozemsku v roce 1896. Jako dítě přišla velmi brzy o rodiče a vyrůstala u příbuzných. Proto se v osmnácti letech provdala za kapitána nizozemské armády a odjela s ním na ostrovy Jáva a Sumatra. Manželství se jí nevydařilo, a tak manžela opustila a vrátila se do Evropy, do Paříže. Tam začala svou kariéru orientální tanečnice. Postupně se proslavila a v době první světové války získala kontakty s vysokými vojenskými hodnostáři. Nejprve přijala nabídku pracovat ve službách německé rozvědky. Později přijala podobnou nabídku od Francouzů. V roce 1917 však byla odhalena jako dvojitá agentka a za zradu popravena.
