Příběh se odehrává v roce 1847, kdy polární výprava sira Johna Franklina při hledání takzvané severozápadní cesty beznadějně uvízne v polárním ledu. Námořníkům dvou sesterských lodí Britského královského námořnictva Erebus a Terror docházejí potraviny a většina jich onemocní kurdějemi. Trpící posádku navíc pronásleduje záhadný tvor nořící se z ledových hlubin.
