Ve futuristické společnosti Japonska byl zaveden komplexní systém označovaný jako "Červené nitě vědy", který má podpořit úspěšná manželství a bojovat proti stále nižší porodnosti. Na základě výpočtu kompatibility jsou mladým lidem ve věku 16 let vládou přidělováni sňatkoví partneři, přičemž na ty, kteří toto nařízení neuposlechnou, čekají přísné důsledky. Pro Jukariho Nejimu, teenagera, který se považuje za průměrného ve všech ohledech, může být tento systém nejlepší šancí na spokojený život. Jukari se však vzepře systému a vyzná se ze své lásky k Misaki Takasaki, která je jeho spolužačkou a dlouholetou láskou. Po počátečním zdráhání Misaki jeho city ve chvíli vášně opětuje. Bohužel dříve, než mohou oba pokračovat ve svém vztahu, obdrží Yukari oznámení o svatbě. Poté je vržen do matoucí sítě lásky a lží, když jeho nepříliš nadšená přidělená partnerka Ririna Sanada začne být fascinována jeho nezákonným románkem.
