When We Rise zaznamenává osobní a politické boje, nezdary a triumfy hnutí označeného jako LGBT (zkratka označující lesby, gaye, bisexuály a transgender osoby). Tato "rodina" pomohla propagovat odnož hnutí za občanská práva a to od svého turbulentního založení ve 20. století až do současných dnů, které jsou ve znamení uvolnění atmosféry ve smýšlení celé společnosti ohledně práv LGBT. Jednotlivé epizody seriálu (celkem 7 epizod) jsou zaměřeny na historii hnutí za práva homosexuálů počínaje vzpourami Stonewall vyvolanými v roce 1969. Série je částečně inspirována monografií aktivisty LGBT Clevea Jonese "When We Rise: My Life in the Movement".
