Hai to gensō no Grimgar je příběhem o tom, že život není jednoduchý, obzvlášť když se objevíte na místě, o kterém vůbec nic nevíte a chybí vám kromě vzpomínek na minulost i peníze a navíc je svět, kde jste, plný lidí se speciálními a magickými schopnostmi, které vy ale nemáte - zatím... Skupina mladých lidí se probudí v temnotě, nikdo neví, odkud pocházejí a jak se tam ocitli. Když se dají dohromady a opustí temnou místnost, tak se před nimi rozprostře svět známý jako "Grimgar". Zde jsou prakticky ihned zajati zdejšími vojáky a odvedeni do jejich tábora. Skupina u sebe nic nemá, ale jídlo, příbytek i šaty něco stojí. A tak se mladí lidé, proto aby se uživili, stávají lovci zdejších různorodých lesních tvorů, kteří mají nejrůznější magické schopnosti a kteří ohrožují zdejší obyvatele a nebo jsou na jejich tělech nejrůznější části (drápy, zuby, kůže), které lze dobře prodat. Toto ovšem není nijak jednoduché, obzvlášť když nemáte prakticky žádné zkušenosti a ani řádný výcvik!
