Hlavním hrdinou je bývalý zločinec Michael Payton, který je známý jako výborný řidič. Paytonovi proto vymažou paměť, dají mu nové jméno - Joe Astor - a udělají z něj řidiče špičkově vybaveného superauta. Tak se Joe dostává na tu správnou stranu zákona a řízením Zmije pracuje na vyřešení těch nejtěžších zločinů. V tom mu pomáhá i mechanik Julian Wilkes, který je upoután na invalidním vozíčku, protože ho srazilo auto. Zmije startuje...

Ve městě Metro City se rozmáhá zločinost společně s nejrůznějšími kriminálními gangy, především pak teroristickou skupinou Outfit. Proti páchání této činnosti je zřízena tajná speciální skupina, zřízena federální vládou. Zbraň, která k tomuto účelu má být použita je speciální vozidlo, které se při transformaci maskuje jako auto Zmije. Zmiji sestrojil technologický specialista Julian Wilkes, který sám ochrnul, při přestřelce mezi policií a zločinci. Samostatný projekt je opožděn o četné překážky, ale především proto, že nemá řidiče s potřebnými schopnostmi. Vše se změní, při jedné noční loupeži a následné honičce mezi policií a jedním z vůdců Outfitu Michaelem Paytonem. Ten ačkoliv sám je vynikající řidič, je při autohavarii těžce zraněn a zadržen. Oficiálně na operačním sále umírá, ale ve skutečnosti je mu díky moderní technologii společně s pokrokovou medicínou zaveden do mozku implantát, který mu promaže zločineckou minulost a tak vzniká z Paytona nová osobnost Joe Astor.
