V roce 1892 ztroskotá na pobřeží Austrálie loď. Neštěstí přežije pouze jeden námořník a mladá žena, Philadelphia Gordonová, která na lodi cestovala společně s rodiči. Její výchovy se tak ujímá přísný strýček Charles a teta Hester. Na cestu do nového domova se Philadelphia vydává společně se strýčkem Charlesem na kolesovém parníku po řece Murray. Zde se také poprvé setkává s charismatickým kapitánem plavidla - Brentonem Edwardsem.
