Změna je náročná nejen pro rodiče, ale především pro jejich tři děti – sebevědomý basketbalista Glen, naivní a dobrosrdečná Spencer i tichý intelektuál Clay se budou muset vyznat ve spletitých vztazích na nové škole. Kingova střední nabízí koktejl zbohatlických dětiček, kluků z ghetta, roztleskávaček, cílevědomých studentů i aspirujících rockových hvězd. Jednou z nich je i zkušená Ashley, která Spencer Carlinovou od první chvíle velmi silně přitahuje... Do neznáma představuje klasickou škálu témat seriálů pro teenagery – vztahy a chození, drogy, sport i potíže s rodiči. Oproti jiným teen soap operám zde ale nejde tolik o to ukázat životní styl a módní výstřelky „mladých a neklidných". Seriál spíš zpodobňováním společenských rolí v prostředí střední školy ukazuje dospívání jako období, kdy člověk přestává naplňovat očekávání druhých a naopak si ujasňuje, čím chce být on sám. Zároveň se jedná o prvního amerického zástupce žánru, který otevřeně ukazuje homosexualitu dospívajících.
