Na přelomu století se rozhodnou vzít do svého domu sirotku. Matthew a jeho sestra Marilla jsou však tak trochu zmateni z toho, když jim místo chlapce pošlou holčičku. Její jméno je Anne Shirley a hned v prvních minutách je docela zřetelně vidět, že je to holka s mimořádnou fantazií a netradičním pohledem na svět. Jen náhodou se Marilla rozhodla nechat si Annu v domě, i když Annin způsob myšlení a snění je Marille a jejímu pragmaickému myšlení vzdálen. Netrvá však dlouho, než se Anna novém prostředí zdomácní a než si Marilla uvědomí, co Anna do jejího života může přinést.
