Uprostřed léta roku 1989 se v lesích poblíž ospalého jihosaského města ozvou výstřely. Hrozivý nález dvou těl bezprostředně následuje další vražda. O případu je informován i nově jmenovaný policejní ředitel Thomas Bethge, který z oblasti pochází a žije tam jeho celá rodina. Proto ho přepadne velmi zlé tušení, když jeho milovaná sestra Barbara krátce po dvou brutálních vraždách beze stopy zmizí... Šestidílný seriál Temný les je volně inspirován skutečným kriminálním případem tzv. Vražd v Göhrdském lese, které otřásly německou společností i kriminalistikou. Policejní vyšetřování trvalo téměř tři dekády, během kterých případ tragicky a nevratně ovlivnil životy většiny osob, které na něj byly napojeny.
